Fish Puttu

This recipe can be done with left over king fish (Vanjaram).The recipe for King fish fry can be found here.


  • Fish – 1 cup + 1/2 cup (shredded into small pieces using hand.Remove the thorns and skin)
  • Oil – 9 Tsps
  • Mustard seeds – 1/4 tsp
  • Cumin seeds – 1/4 tsp
  • Onions – 1 cup + 1/3 cup (chopped)
  • Turmeric powder – less than 1/4 tsp
  • Curry leaves – 6
  • Salt – very less because the fish contains salt.
  • Pepper powder – 1/4 tsp or more
  • Cilantro – for garnishing.


  • Heat oil in a pan and add the mustard seeds. After the mustard splutters, add the cumin seeds followed by the onions,curry leaves and turmeric powder.
  • Wait till the onions turn golden brown.
  • Add the shredded fish and cook for 5 mins on medium flame.
  • Stirring occasionally .
  • Finally add very little salt if necessary and some pepper powder.
  • Turn off the stove and granish with chopped cilantro leaves.

This dish tastes great with dal and rasam.

Any type of fish can be used to prepare this dish.I have used King fish (Vanjaram in Tamil) .And its our favorite .


  • King fish (Vanjaram) steak cut – 8 slices
  • Turmeric powder – 1/4 tsp
  • Chilli powder – 2 Tbsps
  • Salt
  • Water – 3 1/2 Tbsps
  • Oil for deep frying or Olive oil spray for baking


  • Clean fish with lots of salt and wash them in water.
  • Add turmeric powder to the fish and wash them again.
  • Make a paste of chilli powder, salt,turmeric powder ( less than 1/4 tsp) and water.
  • The paste should not be too watery.
  • Heat oil for deep frying.Coat the fish with the chilli paste and deep fry the fish.


  • You can  bake the fish in a preheated oven at 350 F.
  • Place the fish in a baking tray covered with aluminum foil and coated with olive oil.
  • Spray some olive oil on the fishes.Place the tray in the middle rack and cook for 13 minutes.
  • Flip the fish over and spray some olive oil and cook for 8 minutes.
  • Turn the broil option ‘on’ and leave the oven door slightly open to prevent the fire alarms from beeping.
  • Let the fish cook for 4 minutes. Flip the fish over and cook for 2 minutes making sure that the oven door is open.

Baking is a healthy way to eat fish. If you have an oven,you must try it out.  I bet,you won`t go back to the old method of deep frying the fish.

Shrimp fry



  • Shrimp – 25 jumbo shrimps
  • Oil – 3 Tbsps
  • Mustard seeds – 1 tsp
  • Curry leaves – 12 leaves or less
  • Onions – 1/2 an onion (chopped)
  • Turmeric powder –  less than 1/4 Tsp
  • Ginger garlic paste – 1 1/2 Tbsps
  • Chilli powder – 1 Tbsp (according to your taste)
  • Hing – half of 1/4 tsp
  • Pepper powder – 1/2 tsp
  • Salt – as required

Cleaning the shrimp:

  • Clean the shrimp by removing its head and tail. The black vein of the shrimp has to be removed.
  • Wash the shrimps with water 3 times.Drain the water.
  • Add turmeric powder to the shrimps and let them sit till the masala cooks.


  • Heat oil in a pan.Add mustard seeds and wait till it splutters.
  • Add the curry leaves,onions and turmeric powder.When the onions turn golden brown,add the ginger garlic paste and saute for a minute.Wash the shrimps again before cooking.
  • Add the shrimps and cook for few minutes( overcooking the shrimp will roughen then).Add the chilli powder,hing and salt to the shrimp.Cook for 2 mins.
  • Turn off the stove and add  pepper powder to it.

Prawns(Shrimp) which are small in size tastes really good.On the other hand,jumbo shrimps are more fleshy and juicier.
