Kathirikkai kosthu is a side dish for Ven pongal.It tastes better than sambar and chutney.My mom used to make this side dish for ven pongal and it is my favorite. Easy and fast recipe that even brinjal haters will love.The recipe below serves 2.


  • Brinjal – 5 ,chopped
  • Yellow moong dal – 1/4 cup
  • Green Chilli – 1, make a small cut on it
  • Garlic – 3 cloves,chopped
  • Tomato – 1,chopped
  • Onion – 1 cup,chopped
  • Turmeric powder – 1/8 tsp
  • Water – 1 cup + 1/2 cup
  • Oil – 3 Tbsp
  • Mustard seeds – 1/4 tsp
  • Curry Leaves – 5
  • Dry Red Chilli – 2
  • Salt – to taste


  • Pressure cook the brinjal, moong dal, green chilli, garlic, tomato, onion, turmeric powder in water for 2 whistles.
  • Remove the green chilli and smash the brinjal mixture with a dal masher.
  • Add salt to taste.
  • Prepare the seasoning with oil,mustard seeds, curry leaves and dry red chilli.
  • Add the seasoning to the brinjal mixture and serve with ven pongal

    Adding curry powder might change its taste.
    If you want it more spicy, you can try adding more green chillies.
